About the Charity
LOS ANGELES REGIONAL FOOD BANKOne in five people in Los Angeles County experiences food insecurity. Our vision is that no one goes hungry in Los Angeles County. Since 1973, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has distributed more than 1.2 billion pounds of food. We collect food from hundreds of resources. With the help of 30,000 volunteers annually and an agency network of more than 600 partner agencies, we serve more than 300,000 people on a monthly basis.
My first personal project was to raise money for the LA Food Bank, I titled it "A Table for Food" and basically, I made a new dining room table for my family.
The thing is, I've never made a table before, and I didn't know where to begin, or even where to find the wood for a table. I had been complaining to my wife that our dining room table needed to be thinner and longer, and if it could be reclaimed wood, that would be cool too. We would see tables at furniture stores for over $1000! But not only were they expensive, they weren't exactly what we wanted.
So I began to think about what it could look like and I imagined really thick wood, a rough surface and big old bolts holding it together. A few days went by and I was cleaning out a storage space when I came across some wood beams that we had taken out of our daughter's room. They had been wall-to-wall for bookshelves. They were over two-inches thick, and had heavy paint on them and metal strips for the shelf hangers, but underneath, they were douglass fir - hard and old.
It was a chore, but I came up with a design to create a table and bench that has become a great project and a pretty darn nice dining room table. And it put some extra food on the plates of some needy people with some kind donations from friends and family. Update 1 – The Table Design
Posted on July 09, 2017 by Brand Sixty-Seven
Since I don't really know the first thing about making furniture, my approach was to keep it simple. After I found the wood (three 12-foot pieces of 2.5"x 8" fir). I started by sketching the basic shapes of the wood that I had to work with - and keeping in....Show More
